Lima Location: Pacific Coast of Peru
Located on the Pacific Coast, Lima is Peru’s largest city. Within the city are some very interesting and upscale neighborhoods. The Lima Spanish School is located in the charming district known as Miraflores. Miraflores and it neighbor San Isidro are well-known for shopping, restaurants, cafes, and theaters. Both areas are great for walking around in and taking in the sites. For example in Miraflores each weekend at the Parque Kennedy artists come out to sell their artwork. After you get done strolling through their you can stop by one of the cafes for a glass of wine and a bit to eat. Just down the road you will find the beach area full of surfers, boats, and people just hanging out.
The best place to start your exploration of Lima would be the Plaza de Armas. This is the historic center of Lima. To the north resides the Government Palace. During the weekdays you can see the changing of the guards at 12:45pm. To the east you will find the cathedral, and to the west the Municipalidad de Lima (town hall).
Throughout the year Lima is host to many different festivals which are colorful and interesting. You can also spend your time visiting the many museums throughout the city. The most important museum is the Museum of Anthropology and Archaeology located in the Plaza Bolivar. It is probably one of the more interesting museums in South America. The museum has a great collection of pottery and textiles from all the major cultures of ancient Peru. Other museums to consider are the Museum of the Republic and the Gold Museum.
