| "The
Day of the Dead" is a tradition celebrated every year on
Nov 1st and 2nd by Mexicans. It is one of the most important holidays
of the Mexican Catholic calendar. This tradition goes back to
prehispanic practices. They believe that once a year the dead
come to earth to visit their loved ones. Mexicans dedicate these
days to greet and host their visitors and make their stay on earth
enjoyable. Special food and drink are served and candles and flower
decorations are put up to welcome the celestial visitors.
This day is celebrated all
over Mexico but due to the ethnic diversity of Mexico the traditions
may vary from region to region. Some communities decorate the
graves with flowers and candles and sing prayers accompanied by
music. However there is no sadness associated with this day, it
is a joyful remembrance of the people who have died. November
1st is called “The day of the little angles” in for
all the young children that have died. November 2nd is for the
adults.
