| A
piñata is a decorated vessel like a pottery jar or a dummy
filled with toys, candies, fruits, sweets and gifts. They are
made from a brightly colored paper pulp or paper strips glued
together with other materials. The shape or kind of Pinatas is
limited only by the imagination. It usually takes the shape of
a bird , a star or an airplane. This object is then hung with
a rope. Blindfolded children then take turns to locate and beat
it with a stick till the goodies fall out. Once it is split open
the children rush to grab the goodies. It provides a great way
for children to enjoy themselves during birthday's and other celebrations
The piñata was originally used by the
Spaniards as part of a masked piñata dance on the first
Sunday in Lent. Its traditionally used during christmas after
the posada or procession. During Easter, piñatas in the
form of Judas are carried into the streets and people take turns
to beat it with sticks.
