| Once
a small village, Playa del Carmen has now grown into a cosmopolitan
city and due to its climate and natural attractions is a popular
tourist destination.
The city's main street is the Fifth avenue. This
bustling commercial area is filled with stores, cafes, bars, handicraft
and clothing stores. The restaurants are known for their delicious
food and great variety of cuisines. The cuisine ranges from Italian,
Chinese, Japanese and french to vegetarian and seafood specialties.
The city is dotted with typical Mexican restaurants and cantinas
with excellent seafood.

Along the sidewalk you will find several entertainers like painters,
actors, musicians and dancers. Singing traditional songs and performing
ritual dances. You can hear the marimba or mariachi's or the rhythmic
tapping of the voladores.
At night you can visit any of the numerous bars
in town where the DJ play's reggae, rock, jazz or blues or join
the frenzy in one of the night clubs that play salsa, merengue,
cumbia and other styles of music. You will also have the opportunity
to enjoy parties on some nearby beaches.
The
beaches in Playa are beautiful. The bay between the pier and the
first point is the most popular. The ocean currents are mild and
the beaches have all the comforts and facilities need to have
a good time. A wide variety of tourist activities are offered
in Playa de Carmen. Among the more popular attractions are diving,
snorkeling, horseback riding, bicycle rentals and windsurfing.
Yoga, dance and drum classes are also becoming popular. For tourists
who want to pickup souvenirs there are many handicraft and clothing
stores on Fifth Avenue, where you can find products local products
as well as from places like Indonesia and India. Other tourist
attractions are the Mayan ruins and archaeological sites. Boat
trips and jungle treks are also available.
