Scuba diving is not very difficult, a few hours of training and
a quick specialized course for newcomers is always recommended.
After a few hours of practice, beginners can learn to stay under
water for longer periods of time. The Mexican Caribbean has the
second largest coral reef system in the world, the Great Maya
Reef. Scuba diving in the great Mayan reef is one of the most
fascinating experiences you would ever have.
Snorkeling is a great opportunity to get acquainted
with the underwater world. Although it is pretty easy, floaters
are highly recommended for beginners. The depth of most snorkeling
sites are about 10 - 30 meters. All the equipment including mask,
fins, snorkel etc can be rented.
Cenotes
are a unique opportunity to experience cavern diving and snorkeling
at its best. The best cavern diving can be done at Dos Ojos, Azul
and the Bat Cave. You must be cave-dive certified to dive these
underground rivers since it can get dangerous. Some specialized
equipment are needed to dive them safely.
Diving at reefs near Cancun are for advanced
divers, they often have strong currents, excellent visibility
and an enormous quantity of sea life. Deeper dives can be done
at Punta Nizuc. Diving on Isla Mujeres is just 30 ft and is a
great dive for all. Manchones Chicos has separated blocks of coral
that reach up to the surface where fan corral, sponges and a great
quantity of tropical fish can be seen. Manchones Grandes and Cuevones
and Banderas reef are a few other sites with spectacular underwater
environment.
