Playa
del Carmen is quite small and perfect to be explored by foot.
However, to get to the many surrounding beaches and golf courses
you can either use buses or Tricycle Taxis.
To get to Playa del Carmen you would need to
take a flight to Cancun and use ground transportation from there
on. For students going through Spanish Abroad, Inc. airport pickups
are available for a fee of 35 USD per person. Ground transportation
out of the Cancun airport is tightly regulated by a union. City
taxis are only allowed to bring tourists to the airport, and are
prohibited to take tourists from the airport. There is a free
shuttle van running to the international terminal where the rental
car agencies are located.
The ground transportation at the airport include
buses, shuttle vans, private taxis and rental cars. There are
several first and second class buses that will take you anywhere
including Mexico city. The rates are posted on a board in the
ticket booths. You must purchase a ticket from the booth before
you board the bus.
Taxis in Playa del Carmen are plentiful at any
hour. Negotiate the fare before you get into the car if you’re
traveling outside of Playa. There are numerous rental outlets
for cars all around Playa. However it is advisable to make rental
car reservations from your home country to save money. Car rentals
are not cheap but are the best mode of transportation because
there are so many great things to see in the area.
