| Lima
is home to an abundance of some great museums. If you have a chance
visit all of them. If you have limited time, then at a minimum
stop by the Museo Museo Nacional de Antropología, Arqueología
e Historia and the Gold Museum. These two museums will give you
a great taste of the rich history of Peru.
Museo Nacional de Antropología,
Arqueología e Historia
This is the most important museum in Peru, and
probably one of the best found anywhere in Latin America. Founded
in 1938, today the museum houses the largest historical collection
in Peru. You will find collections from all Peruvian cultures,
including textiles, ceramics, metal work, sculptures and more.
The collections from the Chavin, Nazca, Mochica,
Paracas, Huari, Chimi, Sican and Inca are absolutely outstanding!
The museum in the past was also the residence of the Viceroys
La Serna and Pezuela plus the Liberators Simon Bolivar and San
Martin. You can find many interesting historical articles from
this period.
The Gold Museum
One of our favorites! This museum is actually
a private collection of textiles, Pre-Hispanic gold and silver,
and military objects from around the world. The museum was founded
in 1968 and today has close to 30,000 objects on display.
Museo Arqueológico Rafael Larco Herrera
It is claimed that this museum holds the largest
private collection of Pre Colombian art in the world. You will
find excellent displays of ceramic, stone, gold, wood and textiles.
Museo de la Nación
A museum housing displays covering Pre Colombian
cultures dating from 14,000 BC to the very early 1500's. You will
find a nice ceramic exhibition plus replicas of some of the more
important archaeological sites in Peru.
Museo del Banco Central de Reserva
A small museum the covers archaeology, the money of Peru, and
contemporary Peruvian painting.
Museo de San Francisco de Jesus
This museum contains religious articles from
the viceroyalty period of Peru, plus the paintings of Francisco
de Zurbaran.
Exhibition of liturgical articles of the viceroyalty, carved
articles and paintings of Francisco of Zurbarán.
There are other museums in Lima, but the above are some of the
more interesting.
