located in Lima.
The Historic Center Of Lima
The
Cathedral
Construction of this impressive cathedral began
in 1535 at the time of the founding of Lima. The initial structure
was actually very small. However in 1564 the Spanish architect
Jeroniimo de Aliaga created the designs for a far larger cathedral
based on the cathedral in Sevilla. Today the cathedral is an impressive
structure and dominates the Plaza de Armas.
Santo Domingo
Santo Domingo is home to the oldest convent in
Lima. The complex is actually a series of courtyards and cloisters.
Overall the complex has a very peacefull feel to it. Santo Domingo
is the final resting place of Juan Masias, San Martin de Porress,
and Santa Rosa de Lima.
San Francisco
San Francisco is actually a church and a convent.
It is located just around the corner from the Plaza de Armas.
The structure was started in 1542, but not actually completed
until 1674. The architecture is absolutely stunning. Take some
time to walk through this historic complex. If you have time visit
the catacombs underneath the church. There you will find the resting
place of tens of thousands of the former inhabitants of Lima.
Historic Mansions
Palacio de Torre Tagle
This is considered by many to be one of the most
stunning examples of 18th century architecture in Lima. The building
shows obvious Moorish, Creol, and Andalusian influence. Today
the building houses the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Casa Aliaga
This
mansion has a long history. The mansion is said to have been built
over the top of a private temple of a local chief by the name
of Taulischusco. The conquistador of Peru (Francisco Pizarro)
gave the land to Jeronimo de Aliaga who then constructed the mansion.
Interestingly the mansion is still owned by descendants of Aliaga.
Casa Goyeneche or Rada
A beautiful mansion that shows the distinctive
French influence that was prevalent during the 18th century. The
building is notable for its beautiful balconies and doorways.
The Presidential Palace
This structure is prominently located to one
side of the massive Plaza de Armas. It is the main building used
by the President of Peru and houses apartments, fantastic halls
and countless pieces of art. The building is also called the Casa
de Pizarro. This is due to the fact that Pizarro administered
Peru from a building that used to be situated on this site.
