Playa del Carmen City Guide
Playa del Carmen Location: State of Quintana Roo (on the white sandy beaches of the Caribbean)
Playa del Carmen is a lovely, picturesque town located in the center of Mexico’s Cancun-Tulum corridor in the state of Quintana Roo. In the heart of the Yucatan Peninsula, this small city is approximately 35 minutes from the international airport in Cancun, and only 45 minutes by ferry to Cozumel. Though the city is smaller than Cancun, one can still find numerous shops, restaurants, bars, and discos, enough to satisfy any taste.
Playa del Carmen is known throughout the world for its numerous attractions which include: snorkeling, diving, wind surfing, fishing, golf, and horseback riding. The beaches themselves are spectacular. Nowhere else will you find beaches so white, and sand so soft. For snorkeling and diving, you have come to the right place. The water is crystal clear, and the area is home to numerous reefs, all of which are teeming with an abundance of life. For something a little different, try exploring some of the beautiful ‘cenotes’ (natural wells) located around Playa del Carmen. Snorkeling and diving in these wells is truly a once in a lifetime experience.
For those interested in the Maya, there is no better place to be. Within just a few hours of Playa del Carmen are the impressive ruins of Chichen Itza, Coba, and of course Tulum. There are numerous tours plus excellent bus service from Playa del Carmen that will allow you to get to any one of these places very easily.
This area of Mexico is also well-known for its abundance of wildlife, and rightly so. Just south of Playa del Carmen are two wonderful parks/reserves (Xel-ha and Xcaret) that allow the visitor the chance to see some of the exotic plants and animals that live in this part of Mexico.
