Arrival Into Costa Rica
The first part of the Teen Spanish Program starts in either the
San Jose airport for Dominical students or Liberia for Tamarindo students. In San Jose, students will stay in a small
but comfortable hotel called Rosa del Paseo. This local jewel
is located in an old Victorian mansion in the western part of
San Jose. Students will be met that the airport and then transported
to the hotel. The web site for this hotel is: www.hotelrosadelpaseo.com/welcome.htm
In Liberia, students will be taken directly to their hotel in Tamarindo.
Upon
arrival at either location, students will be met at the airport
by the camp directors and counselors. They will be transported
to the hotels by minibuses and given time to settle in and relax.
Rooms and roommates will be assigned at this time. Once all
the students have arrived, they will gather for the Welcome
Dinner. Here students will get to know one another and the staff.
The next day, the Spanish and adventure activities begin!
Spanish Adventure Camp
The actual Spanish Adventure Program takes place at two different
beach locations on the Pacific, Playa Tamarindo for Spanish and Art students, and Playa Dominical for Spanish and Surfing Students.
On Tuesday, students going to Dominical will take a private air-conditioned bus
to their final destination. The trip to each location takes
approximately 4 hours with a stop for lunch along the way.
Students going to Tamarindo will have a short one hour bus ride upon arrial from the Liberial airport where they will see many sugarcane fields and ranches that the area is known form.
Playa Dominical
Located
on the Central Pacific Coast of Costa Rica is Playa Dominical.
Here you will find iguanas lounging on the beach, toucans flying
through the rainforest, and troops of monkeys swinging through
the rainforest. The pueblo of Playa Dominical is home to approximately
800 permanent residents. The town is safe, and students can
walk from one end of the town to the other in less than 15 minutes.
Students will find the locals to be very friendly, and during
their stay will get to know many of them. Many locals can speak
Spanish but students will find that they are more than willing
to help them practice their Spanish.

In Dominical students will be housed in the Lookout Hotel www.hotelcostarica.com. The hotel provides its guests luxury and privacy, surrounded by pristine beaches and lush, tropical jungle. Far from the tourist crowds, your only interruption will be parrots squawking overhead, waves crashing into shore, and howler monkeys calling from the trees. The property also features an expansive open-air restaurant, sparkling pool, and magnificent views of both the ocean and the jungle. Students will be bunked with 2-4 students per room.
Playa Tamarindo
Playa
Tamarindo is located on the northern Pacific coast of Costa
Rica in the tropical dry forest. This is one of the last remaining
dry forests in all of Central America and is teaming with wildlife.
The northwest region of the country gets markedly less rain
during the year and the flora and fauna are very different from
the rest. The town is one of the most popular destinations in
the country and has a population of about 2000 residents. Although
the town has grown a great deal in the last few years, it still
has the feel of a small beach pueblo. With the howler monkeys
in the trees, iguanas on the ground and the long white sandy
beach, it is a great destination.

In Tamarindo student will be housed at the Hotel Luna Llena.
Situated at a stone's throw from the beach and right next door to the Spanish school. It
is centrally located to everything in town. There are two students
per room and each room has air-conditioning and a private bath.
The camp has one complete section of rooms facing the large
swimming pool and recreation center. You can visit the hotel
on the web at: www.hotellunallena.com. Aside from the swimming
pool, there is a very nice restaurant where breakfast and one
other meal per day will be served.
The Spanish Adventure Program
While
in Dominical and Tamarindo the program will focus on three specific
aspects; Spanish classes, Surf lessons (Dominical) or Art Lessons (Tamarindo), and Adventure activities.
Local professionals and organizations will handle each of these
equally important parts of the overall program. The Spanish
classes will be taught by Costa Rican teachers who have years
of experience in teaching Spanish as a second language.
In Playa Dominical the Dominical Surf School will handle surf
instruction and their web site is: www.dominicalsurfschool.com.
The adventure part of the program will mainly be handled by
the Hacienda Baru National Wildlife Refuge. This nonprofit and
private organization is very involved with saving the tropical
rainforest and in educating the local populace as to the importance
of conservation. Their web site is www.haciendabaru.com and
you can take a look at the different tour options.
In
Playa Tamarindo the art program is taught by Richard Godfrey. Mr. Godfrey graduated with a BFA in 1976, and MFA in 1978 from the San Francisco Art Institute. Additional studies at Carnegie Mellon University and Cleveland Art Institute. Mr. Godfrey has been involved in art education with youth and college programs over the past fifteen years, conducting classes and workshops at the University of Los Angeles, California; San Francisco Art Institute; Santa Monica Museum, as well as numerous other institutions. As an artist, Richard Godfrey has exhibited his work in galleries and museums both nationally and internationally including Otis Institute, Pasadena Armory Center for the Arts, Laguna Art Museum and the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery.
The overall goal of the Teen Spanish Program is to give teenagers
from all over the world the opportunity to learn Spanish, understand
a new culture and have an adventurous and fun time. With this
program we believe that the student will not only learn a great
deal of Spanish, but will also come away having had an experience
of a lifetime.
Teen Comments:
"This trip was one of the best experiences of my entire life. I went into the experience by myself and was a nervous wreck. I came out of experience more confident than I have ever had in my life. Not only did I learn to surf and experience all sorts of fun things like zip swinging through the rainforest... but I skipped a grade level of Spanish in school and made great friends. The trip was well organized, the group leaders were great and enthusiastic.
I highly recommend it."
~ Aubre ~
"Don’t think I realized how much fun I had until I got back. It was by far one of the coolest experiences I’ve ever had. I’m trying to talk my mom into letting me come back next year."
~ Kassidy ~
"It was one of the most unique and wonderful experiences of my life. It combined the fun and freedom of a perfect tropical vacation with the chance to not only be taught but emerged in the Spanish language and culture. The teachers were fun and funny, it was a rare time when I actually enjoyed going to classes! Looking back, I can’t believe how many different fun activities were fit into the short two weeks: zip-lining through the rainforest, snorkeling, hiking to waterfalls, surfing, white water rafting, and wandering through the little town watching the sunset that never failed too resemble the nicest of postcard pictures…"
